KERAMOS

Location: cottesloe
KERAMOS (ker’-am-os): An ancient Greek word meaning earthenware from which the word ceramics is derived.

In ancient times, clay was a fundamental material and the process of making various items including vessels and tools was a skilled craft essential for daily life. Clay transforms and nurtures. It can be easily shaped, making it robust, but it can also be fragile, allowing it to be easily damaged.

Curated by Linton & Kay Galleries, KERAMOS is the artist’s response to the connection of where we dwell. Each ceramicist employs earth, water and fire in their own style, demonstrating a strong engagement with the craftsmanship of the past while pushing the boundaries of ceramics beyond function and tradition. Their practices explore ideas around our involvement with humanity, the connections to our own identity and the fragility of our natural environment.
