“Immortal Stories can be best described as sculptural illustrations of personal fairy tales. After a trip to Egypt in 2017 I became interested notions of immortality. The stories we tell about ourselves personally, within our families and in our wider communities, provide a potential way for us to live forever. The Egyptians, and many other early cultures illustrated their important stories in sculptural relief carvings to preserve them. These works are low relief sculptural illustrations of stories from my own life, that of my family and from other people and places.
“This work has been largely produced in crochet, my preferred method of sculpture making. Crochet in a very literal sense follows the pattern of a story, it is a single thread with a beginning and an end and many intervening twists and turns. It is a meditative process and all the thoughts and emotions that pass through you get tied into each stitch. Crocheting these important stories is a very real way for me to anchor them, to tie them down and make sure they continue to exist.” Mikaela Castledine 2019
