"The natural inclination for a landscape artist is to be concerned with place and light. Certainly, I am always conscious of light and colour and I'm told that a sense of place is usually evoked in viewers of my work. But I've increasingly come to understand the importance of time and perspective. Time works on the landscape but it also works on me the artist and you the viewer. What you see when you look at one of my paintings is a reflection time, place and perspective. The places I paint no longer exist - that tree, or river, or ocean exists only in my imperfect memory. I cannot paint that place the same way again, what you see on the canvas is as stuck in time as my memory. What you see and feel also changes - when you look at my work today you are bringing your current perspective, your current state to the canvas. You are my eyes today, I can't tell you what to see or feel in my work. But we can explore it together.” Joanne Duffy, 2021
