Open Cut introduces one of Australia’s most celebrated figurative
painters, Steve Lopes, to Western Australia. Lopes uses landscape
as a vehicle to investigate the human condition. He presents his
signature dramatic landscapes, some occupied by lost forms or
bearing the scars of human industry such as abandoned mines
or the ravaged Gallipoli hillsides where he recently travelled for a
National commemorative arts project. Lopes’ works are held in major
collections including the NGA, Parliament House Canberra, BHP
Billiton and the Time Warner Collection in New York.
