‘Beneath the Surface’ harks back to my weekends as a youth, when we threw both our diving gear and ourselves into the back of a Ute to escape the scorching heat of the Wheatbelt. The cool, tranquil and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean invited us to dive into an underwater world of colour and life.
Reminiscing on quintessential holidays down south and up north, scooping for crabs in the warm waters of shallow inlets and fishing off the rocks, or from a boat or the beach.
Combining my paper burning technique with watercolours, these vivid renderings in Beneath the Surface capture my intrigue in the primeval beauty of underwater creatures. Those early observations formed the foundation of an everlasting respect for nature and my continued immersion and connection with it.
