DAVID AND RICHARD WILLIAMSON – FLOATING STONES
Artist:
David Williamson, Richard Williamson
Location:
West Perth
7 - 28 AUGUST, WEST PERTH
Although the Williamsons are not household names in the visual arts field in Australia, Richard (father) and David (son) create sculptures and artifacts from stone mined primarily in the Pilbara that are sold and collected internationally, including through Christie’s, Sothebys, other prominent auction houses and international galleries.
Richard describes the journey from contemplating the large, rough piece of stone, hardly knowing from the outside what it could become, starting the cutting process and seeing a window into the possibilities that can yield extraordinarily beautiful final works.
Tiger Eye and Tiger Iron, in the form in which the Williamsons use them are found only in Western Australia and mostly in the Pilbara. The scale of their creations varies from monumental to almost utilitarian, the beauty of the geological specimen being revealed through their understanding of the inherent crystal structure and painstaking machining of the rock.
Orbicular granite, jasper and pyrite, hematite, amethyst and other semi-precious stones also feature in the exhibition.
Richard has a diploma in geology and has always been a stonemason while David is a gemstone carver.
