MUCH IN COMMON, TEXTURE AND TONE

Location: West Perth
Much in Common – Tone and Texture extends the exhibition Much In Common, Nothing Alike by popular demand, and combines top-drawer ceramic art with paintings by well-loved artists from our stockroom.

Landscape is the pivotal link between two- and three-dimensional art, extending the reach of this genre, an invitation to collectors to add depth (no pun intended) to their portfolios.

The exhibition features the immense contribution of ceramic artists, Pippin Drysdale and Jeffery Mincham AM, with their common thread of “landscape”.

Mincham has created his signature glazes over decades, resulting in the unique palette he applies to his hand-coiled organic forms. Monumental in essence regardless of scale, each artwork tracks changes in the hills of his Cherryville surrounds and the Fleurieu Peninsula, with history and contemporary events reflected equally.

Drysdale clusters her porcelain marbles and vessels to evoke breathtaking abstract portraits of the outback through her passion for form and colour.

Through form and finish, brightly coloured or muted glazes, paint or photography, the artworks begin a dialogue, almost of mutual admiration. A landscape created by Minchim is in conversation with an Eleanor Millard or a Min Woo Bang painting; the warm pinks of a Jo Darvall landscape are paired with the glazes of Minchim’s imposing hand-built forms; the topography of a Drysdale porcelain installation draws your eye to Kate Debbo’s playful world.

Combining 3D ceramics with 2D paintings highlights the profound respect Mincham and Drysdale have for the landscape’s physical and spiritual beauty.
