ARTIST TALK AND STUDIO VISIT SATURDAY 30 APRIL FROM 2PM
I am a sculptor and here I have adopted the painters 2D medium to challenge my 3D language. I follow shapes, I find and steal forms that play out within the development of these images.
Because of my work in public art I find myself continually confronted with the imperative of story. A meaning, a context etc. This show avoids all that.
I do not buy paint really, as with my sculpture I value ‘the find’. The serendipity associated with materials that are chanced upon. I have used plaster in this work to build up the surface and to be able to go backwards. Here I’ve been influenced by the painter Bob Juniper – he was always laying down plaster and working in a very delicate way when wet. My style is rougher and more visceral, I create marks fast and without labouring too much. Anyhow thanks Bob.
To be fair, the colour in these paintings reflects my oceanic muse. I sail my little boat that I have recently repainted turquoise. I connect to the vivid, light-filled language of colour along this coast. To get out beyond the river into that crystal water and its blue-green palette is something I truly love.
