On the Edge

Location: cottesloe
Geometry, Geology, Alchemy and Bio-diversity: a heady mix of visual art from four of our well-loved artists.

Jules Sher, at 91, takes an exciting new direction, inspired by a Christian Fletcher photograph that brought to mind Piet Mondrian and the Dutch ‘De Stijl’ movement, prompting Sher to create minimal compositions of coloured squares and lines in relation to space. The added collage gives the works a physical finish.

Pippin Drysdale’s Breakaway and Kimberley Series continue to inspire this octogenarian as she prepares for a major solo show at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, from December this year. Her porcelain compositions, minimalist in an entirely different way from Sher’s, are frequently grouped in clusters that invite the eye to explore the implied topography and the diverse life it supports.

Miik Green presents new works that highlight the meld of control and accident that characterize his glossy resin compositions on aluminium, some with a crescendo of colour, others quietly meditative.

Kate Elsey’s large-scale abstract depictions are grounded in geology, bio-diversity and a compulsion to share her world view of our fragile planet.
