JOSHUA COCKING – THE EDGE OF SOMETHING

Location: subiaco
Joshua Cocking presents The Edge of Something; his first solo exhibition in Perth in six years. Containing a limited selection of major works, this is Cockings most significant body of work to date and follows a busy 2021 comprising a Bachelor of Arts Honours- First Class at Curtin University and an acquisition by John Curtin Gallery.

Joshua says of his work: ‘This body of work is an investigation into Australian post-colonial myth and the over romanticisation of remote Australia. This research into the creation and evolution of outback mythology is through a lens of personal experience as I reflect on my role as a Kartiya (white outsider) in remote communities on Kija/Jaru, Walmajarri/Wangkatjungka and Djugun/Yawuru country in North Western Australia over the last 15 years. I’m interested in discussing the influence, ramifications and legacy of outsider influence in these remote places when good intentions fail and burn out and self-destructive behaviour ensues. The compositions of these paintings contain miscellaneous and personal belongings which act as monuments to failed ambition, totems to the misguided naivety of good intentions left by the outsider. ’
