Steve Lopes lives and works in Sydney. “I try to deal with the figure and the landscape together." he says. "For me, it’s about the relationship we have with our surrounds. The tension between the two both visually and metaphorically is what makes it interesting to tackle that subject.” (Issue 9 of Artist Profile magazine, p. 65) He often works en plein air, painting vignettes of a place that are used as references for large-scale studio works. In 'Pocket Views', he presents a series of smaller works, all little gems.
Lopes is a frequent finalist in national awards and he was awarded the Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London. In 2011 he completed a residency at the prestigious Red Gate Gallery in Beijing – a highly competitive post. He is represented in important national and state collections including the National Gallery of Australia; Federal Parliament House Art Collection; State Library of New South Wales.
