Venice Reflections

Location: subiaco
Zabou, Kiara Rechichi-Baker and Sabrina Dowling-Giudici value collaboration, and “Venice Reflection” is a collaboration of these artists around their Venetian experiences.

Thus Zabou, from her atelier in Dijon, enters that magic world of antique and contemporary Venetian glass beads and other timeless elements that have been used in jewellery in all cultures around the world, travelling through time, tracing connections between people, places and memories, be they bygone empires, silk road caravans or colours of Africa.

Kiara Rechichi-Baker works from her Perth hills studio. In 2013-14, whilst attending residencies at the Venice Printmaking Studio with the late master printmaker, Gianfranco Gorini, her focus shifted to observing and reflecting the waters of the Venice lagoon. Since this time, the laguna Veneta has enthralled her, the tides connecting civilisation and nature. Rechichi-Baker explores different mediums that inform one another and deepen her visual interpretation of the lagoon.

Italo-Australian artist, Sabrina Dowling-Giudici presents a body of glass vessels that celebrate seagrasses as the unsung heroes of the sea. Four species of sea grasses call the Venetian lagoon home. The visual language is tightly executed with continuity from each glass object to the next one in the exhibition. At all times, the perforated glass surfaces include air gaps as an integral part of the presentation of the artwork, an invitation to focus on the contribution of seagrass meadows to the vitality of human breathing.
