Douglas Kirsop – Light of Landscape
Artist:
Douglas Kirsop
Location:
subiaco
Douglas Kirsop’s work is grounded in a deep connection to place. His latest exhibition, Light of Landscape, brings together paintings developed after a recent expedition through the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia. Travelling with a group of fellow artists, Kirsop created a series of quick, on-the-spot sketches in watercolour and gouache—his immediate response to the vast and remote country around him.
Back in the studio, these small studies become the basis for large-scale oil and wax paintings. Some of the works are detailed and representational, while others move toward abstraction, focusing more on the feeling and rhythm of the landscape than on its exact form.
“Light is something that is very evident in my work all the time,” Kirsop says. “I paint at different times of day—it gives me the inspiration in this country to experiment with the environment.”
Spending time in the landscape is an essential part of Kirsop’s process. He observes how things shift throughout the day—light, shadow, colour, atmosphere—and carries those impressions back with him. His paintings don’t just document a scene; they distill an experience.
With Light of Landscape, Douglas Kirsop offers more than a view of the Australian landscape. He invites us to see it as a living, changing space—full of light, movement, and memory.
