Melissa Clements

Saeculum

Perth artist Melissa Clements has earned national recognition for her darkly luminous, Caravaggesque oil paintings that fuse Renaissance technique with raw psychological intensity. A finalist for the Archibald, Lester, Portia Geach and Darling Prizes, Melissa stands at the forefront of a new generation of Australian artists reviving classical realism with unapologetic ambition.

Saeculum is a Latin word used to denote the length of a human life; confronting the span of a life against the rise and fall of civilisations.

Drawing on the myth of Prometheus and inspired by her time spent in the Faroe Islands, Melissa reimagines classical painting through a contemporary lens of fragment and layered narrative, affirming the power of human craft. In an era of fast images and fleeting attention, Melissa Clements is making people stop, look and think.
