Fallen Canopy
Fallen Canopy explores the relationship between what is seen and what lies beyond the frame. By isolating a fragment of the landscape, the frame becomes both a boundary and a point of focus, holding a moment that suggests a larger, continuous environment.
The work draws on natural processes of accumulation and movement. Leaves and vegetation, gathered from the surrounding landscape by wind, settle into a contained space before being shifted by the currents of water. This interplay introduces an element of chance: a randomness that reflects the transient and ever-changing nature of the environment. Heat and light permeate the paintings indicative of a particular location
Although movement and energy are implied through the dynamics of wind and water, the paintings ultimately offers a space of stillness. They invite sustained looking and contemplation, allowing the viewer to return repeatedly and encounter new layers of depth and detail over time.
Commissioned nearly a decade ago through Linton & Kay Galleries for the foyer of the InterContinental Hotel Perth, a major painting titled Fallen Canopy marked a significant moment in the development of this new body of work. This exhibition revisits and extends the exploration of water in the landscape and the subtle yet powerful influence of unseen elements such as wind and heat.
