Min-Woo Bang
“Clouds, with their ethereal beauty and transient presence, mirror the ephemeral essence of life itself. Through layers of subtle hues and dynamic forms, I am perhaps conveying the complexity of grief—the moments of darkness and storm, as well as the fleeting glimpses of light and hope that pierce through the shadows.”
Min Woo Bang is renowned for his emotive and atmospheric cloudscapes. Born in Seoul in 1971, he migrated to Australia in 1990 and has since become a prominent figure in the contemporary Australian art scene. He has showcased his works in over 30 solo exhibitions across Australia and internationally, and has been a finalist in numerous prestigious art awards, including the Wynne Prize for Landscape Painting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2010.
Bang's artistic practice is deeply influenced by his fascination with the natural world, particularly the ever-changing sky. His paintings often depict dramatic cloud formations and expansive skies, capturing the sublime beauty and transient nature of these elements. Drawing inspiration from 16th and 17th century European landscape paintings, Bang uses a Gothic sensibility to depict the sky as the central subject, incorporating elements such as trees or mountains to provide context for the vastness above.
Through his work, Bang invites viewers to contemplate the emotional impact of the natural world, offering a space for reflection where the grandeur and fragility of nature are poignantly conveyed.
