Larry Mitchell
“I have witnessed dramatic changes to some of the most beautiful and fragile places on earth… I paint them because I want to record them before they are lost.”
- Larry Mitchell
Larry Mitchell is a renowned Western Australian painter celebrated for his luminous, large-scale depictions of coastal and ocean environments. Based in Fremantle, Mitchell has spent decades documenting fragile marine landscapes, particularly in the Abrolhos Islands, the Kimberley coast, and remote South Pacific atolls. His meticulous, realist style combines rich colour, atmospheric light, and a deep sense of place, capturing both the beauty and vulnerability of these environments. Working from extensive on-site research, sketches, and photographs, Mitchell’s paintings serve as both visual records and environmental commentaries, highlighting the impact of climate change and human activity on delicate ecosystems. His work is represented in major public, corporate, and private collections, and he remains an influential voice in Australian contemporary landscape painting.
