"I create settings which are a combination of still life objects and nature.“
Magda Joubert is a Perth-based abstract painter whose layered, expressive works explore what she describes as 'mind-sites' — imagined landscapes shaped by memory, place and personal history. Drawing on experiences from diverse geographical locations, including the volcanic terrain of Java and the distinctive geology of South Africa, her work blends vibrant colours, textures, and forms to evoke a sense of psychological and emotional archaeology.
Joubert was originally trained in painting at the University of Pretoria and later completed postgraduate studies at Curtin University in 2007, where she also held a Graduate in Residence role. Having worked in art education, journalism, and public relations, she began creating art full-time later in life and has since exhibited widely in Australia and South Africa. Her works, which are often created using paint, wax, and natural materials, reflect her ongoing interest in the intersection of memory and environment. Joubert regularly exhibits with Linton & Kay Galleries and other Perth venues, and continues to develop a practice that is both introspective and expansive.
