Jules Sher
“I don’t paint the landscape as I see it, but as I remember and feel it — reduced to essential forms and space.”
Jules Sher is a celebrated abstract landscape painter based in Perth, Western Australia, whose work captures the vast light, space and horizon of the Australian landscape in refined colour fields. Having studied at the Johannesburg Art School and the Central School of Art in London, Sher migrated to Australia in 1967. There, he developed a distinctive style blending realism and abstraction, often using a constant horizon line to balance earth and sky. Drawing on memory, mood and aerial perspective, his paintings transform the Western Australian landscape into contemplative, atmospheric compositions that evoke both place and feeling. His work is represented in major national and state collections, and he is recognised for his ability to translate the monumental silence and power of the land into a timeless visual language.
