2 Journeys

Brendon Darby

13 - 30 November 2008

These new works are the result of two recent journeys. Both in Western Australia, but both very different. Seemingly worlds apart.

The modes of transport also couldn’t have been more different. One walking the Bibbulmun Track with a backpack and camping, the other cruising the Kimberley Coast on a luxury boat.

THE SOUTH WEST

Walking the Bibbulmun Track. Camping by the Franklin, Donnelly, Blackwood and Murray Rivers. From Walpole to Dwellingup, mainly in dense forest and lush undergrowth. This journey was about the privilege of being enveloped by the forest, being a very small visitor, like all the other creatures encountered along the way.

“The ground beneath my feet”

The ideas for these works have been growing subconsciously in my mind for many years. In fact my first art attempts in my teens and early twenties were going in a similar direction. The fear of not being accepted and the fight for survival put them back into my subconscious mind.

Instead, and perhaps for good reason, I developed my technical skills in drawing and painting, which are seen in my realistic work. Though pleasant, this did not totally satisfy my deeper needs and the desire to develop my own individual art language became stronger than ever.

Change doesn’t happen from nothing, it happens through life experience and c

"A Long Walking"

In 2007 I was privileged to be invited to spend some time working alongside a group of indigenous Australian artists.  This period has never left me; it feels as if the experience is still filtering through; with each passing day the memories become sharper, increasingly relevant and more acute. I can still hear their voices, I see their faces, I can feel the sun, see and sense the aroma of the land.  In that environment at one with my surroundings, creating came easy.

On my return to the UK the realities of my world inevitably started encroaching on the strength and liberation I felt in the bush.  In my studio, confronting a piece of white paper, trying to capture the experience, I would feel only uncertainty and doubt.  Each day would end in total frustration, knowing that the piece in front of me was failing to honour and do justice to that amazing land and the remarkable, inspir

Stephen Glassborow

Stephen Glassborow

Playtime   4  -  21 September 2008

Stephen Glassborow’s sculptures are as much the result of his artistic virtuosity as of his personal view of the world. They are emphatically playful, frequently deriving their inspiration from phrases of popular culture, and are founded on his love for Art Deco and Pop Art.

“Every artist has to find a tool which helps to develop their ideas.  I use a thought or a phrase to feed my imagination.  Words induce images for me, those images help to create shapes in sculpture. I have lots of little likes that I have made a note of.  They hang around like bubbles.  The bubbles combine and develop into the core of an idea – bronze makes them permanent.

“I am pursuing my idea of beauty, where ever it takes me.”

Born in Hastings, Stephen studied at Brighton Co

GILLIE AND MARC

EXHIBTION 12 - 28 JUNE 2008

"Wishful Thinking"

If you want to live a happy life, get a dog.

Research has shown that pet ownership – and dog ownership in particular – leads to increased happiness, health and well-being. Inspired by this finding, which only proves what dog-lovers have known for years, Gillie and Marc began work on the wishful thinking series.

Gillie and Marc are fascinated by the things that give us pleasure, the things that make us happy, the things that make life worth living. Their subjects are dogs and cats, friendly smiling faces, the bright colours and comforting shapes of furniture and consumer goods. Their art celebrates the things that make us feel happy, loved and comfortable.

“An Attempt at Obedience”

An exhibition of new works by

Bob Booth

13th - 28th March 2008

“The completion of a new exhibition is always a time of demanding reflection.  Letting go of each development that seems to offer some ‘know-how’ security, is never comfortable;  but for me remains a sort of personalised requirement for progress.

“Any notion of arriving at some mastery that offers certainty to my next effort is not really a hope at all, as I note that progress depends on obedience rather than mastery.

“The inner necessity of the work, (that very small unassuming voice,) requires a corresponding inner silence of the painter.  It seems to be a process of developing sensitivity to what is required of me in order to follow.”

Bob Booth’s paintings transport us to a level beyond mere looking.  He is an original artist – not because his subject matter is different but be

“Back to Dullsville”

Thursday 21st February - 9th March 2008

Ronald John Neal is an exciting young Melbourne artist who is rapidly building a reputation as one of the most promising emerging artists in Australia.

“For me, Perth is anything but Dullsville! I travel extensively to paint: from Melbourne to Sydney, from the Outback to the desert and to Perth.

“From the harsh light of Perth’s endless summer, to the seething drama of the night …. it is as if the world has become a stage, so baroque, each moment unique.  For me it is the real Australia.  Big and small, city and town, a jewel in the desert all rolled into one.

“KIMBERLEY COAST AND BEYOND.”

 8 - 25 November 2007

Ingrid Windram is a successful Australian artist with seventeen national solo exhibitions to her credit along with participation in a range of significant group shows.

She is bringing to Perth a distinctive body of work which was created during a special artist-in-residence experience on board the cruise ship "True North" in 2004 where she was exposed to remote, untouched areas in the Kimberley Region.

The unique opportunity provided the inspiration for Ingrid’s breathtaking exhibition that captures the rare beauty of this formidable landscape.

The spirit of the Kimberley; the almost palpable combination of light, colour and place, lives exuberantly through Ingrid Windram's work which was created by going ashore by dingy with sketch book, charcoal, pencils and camera to create a very personal record of an extraordinary exper

Leigh Hewson-Bower

Leigh Hewson-Bower’s realism embraces the notion that Australia’s coastline is no every day place but a treasure to be recorded and revered.

Through his style, an eclectic combination of old and new, his masterful use of complementary and intermediate colours, he has created a compelling body of seascapes that reflect years of intense observation and understanding.

“I have always had a fascination with illusion, the representation of the visual world as I first experienced it as a young boy wandering through the National Gallery of Victoria.

My work is probably a confluence of a few paths; a love of nature and wild places, a passion for photography and a love of art in general, as long as it’s created with skill and intelligence. A few of my favourites: Jan van Eyck, Roger Campion, Caravaggio, Velasquez, Watteau, Boucher, Caspar David Friedrich, Samuel Palmer, Fredric Church, Monet, Picasso, Braque, Pollock, Rauschenberg, Hockney, Lucien Freud

Cedric Baxter

"Song of India"  23 August - 9 September 2007

Cedric Baxter’s joy in life springs from a deep belief in both art and reality.  An individual engaged in a dialogue with the whole, Baxter creates a visual language that is a bond between people, with optimism the overall winner.

This exhibition, “Song of India” presents the discerning collector with a body of work that reflects Cedric’s zest for life through luminescent, glowing colours executed with his free, masterly command of traditional materials. With consciously conceived harmony of form and colour, the paradisial, timeless state is emphasized by the stylization of the human bodies and spatial setting, the rounded beauty of his female figures.

His works suggest a narrative that is still unfolding, leaving the viewer curious about what comes next. As su

"Transitions"

21 June - 8 July 2007

Mel Brigg’s new exhibition, “Transitions”, is a stunning body of innovative paintings that stem from the traditions of figuration and representation and are the result of his superior painting ability.  These new works reveal the individuality that has marked his oeuvre over three decades of professional practice, both in South Africa and Australia.

Now a resident of Queensland, Brigg’s expressionist works are boldly executed, making free use of symbolic and invented colour. The painterly, almost abstract blocks of colour and light are never far from the representational. Through his canvasses, he creates a poetic tension and rhythm with a pictorial space that draws the viewer into visual essays on light and place.

These beautiful paintings both reflect and challenge, holding a
