Ronald John Neal is one of Australia’s most noticed young, neo-realist painters. His passion for depicting the familiar finds an inspiring outlet in Let the Show Go On, a powerful and energetic collection that will command great attention from all who see it.
Here, Neal gives us a grand view of the familiar subject of carnival and of side show alley. He communicates his response through the use of luminous, jewel-like colours in the night scenes or the meticulously planned placement of colour and shape in the day scenes. Over the top characteristics of the fairground predominate, peopled not by film extras but by real life day-trippers and thrill seekers. Actuality is gilded and dramatically enhanced through his virtuoso skills.
Neal’s deep understanding of the masters of bygone centuries, and the palettes they employed, is frequently the key to the ethos of his contemporary tableaux. Even when dealing with subjects that are not idyllic the visual loveliness of the paint is foremost.
The sheer scale and detail of the paintings cannot be ignored. Ronald John uses thrilling draughtsmanship, painting and colouration to present a magnificent exhibition.
