JULES SHER

Jules Sher has an enviable profile garnered through decades of making intelligent paintings of the highest stature that reflect place, time and situation through abstraction. While he needs no introduction to collectors and art lovers, ‘Down to Earth’ is his first Perth solo show in many years.

‘As an abstract landscape painter, I am drawn to the immense space of Western Australia. The distillation of images of this space from an aerial point of view assists me in pursuing an abstract vision of these vast tracts.

In my studio I reassemble filtered memories of the landscape striking a balance between structural concerns and spatial illusion. The horizon line acts as a fulcrum between the earth and sky. This has been a constant theme for many years.

Add to this the elements of space, light, distance and atmosphere which help in integrating earth and sky, giving it mood, harmony and geological time - unique to this part of the world.’ (Jules Sher, July 2009)

Born and brought up in South Africa, Jules studied painting at the Central School of Art in London from 1956 and moved to Australia in 1967.

Jules’ work is characterized by the use of elemental colours, simplicity and the discipline of abstraction that nevertheless resolves itself, on a second glance, into something recognizable.

It was the great exhibition of American Abstract-Expressionism at the Tate Gallery in London in 1958, that helped change the direction of Jules Sher’s art. The style of Nicolas de Stael and the lyrical abstract paintings of Richard Diebenkorn have also had an important influence in his approach to abstracted landscape painting.

Over decades as an art practitioner, Jules Sher has fashioned an immediately recognizable style that marries an understanding of colour and place to reveal lyrical yet geometric compositions that are entirely engrossing.

Jules has had 38 solo exhibitions in London, Johannesburg, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Margaret River and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.

Jules’ new exhibition, “Down to Earth” is just what it says: a collection of beautiful essays on the West Australian landscape.

“Down to Earth” opens at Linton & Kay Fine Art on Thursday 20th August and continues until 4th September 2009.
