DESERT DIARY

Palla Jeroff’s powerful new exhibition, Desert Diary, sees the remote Australian outback continuing as his main source of inspiration. Over the two decades that he has lived in Australia, the Simpson Desert and other remote areas have fascinated and absorbed this artist.
The emotional connection between the barren plains of Western China, the landscape of his youth, and the Australian outback is clearly evident.
The vast tracts of Palla’s paintings continue, for him, to represent a metaphor for life. His figures are loners, preoccupied by their isolation or quietly enjoying a moment with a mate. The landscape paintings, whether large or small, are powerful, abstract and energetic, capturing the rawness and grandeur of the desert.
Desert Diary marks a development in Palla’s approach. Frequently his palette is subdued, putting the focus of this powerful body of work onto his deeper, more contemplative, response to the desert:
‘Black and white can express joy or sadness. The life energy offered by the desert, the feeling that your blood can dance to the desert music, the starkness of the desert for me is an equivalent to the reality of life, the hope for the future that everyone finds within him or herself. Everyone must find their own way.’
