Stephen Glassborow

Stephen Glassborow’s sculptures are as much the result of his artistic virtuosity as of his personal view of the world. They are emphatically playful, frequently deriving their inspiration from phrases of popular culture, and are founded on his love for Art Deco and Pop Art.
“Every artist has to find a tool which helps to develop their ideas. I use a thought or a phrase to feed my imagination. Words induce images for me, those images help to create shapes in sculpture. I have lots of little likes that I have made a note of. They hang around like bubbles. The bubbles combine and develop into the core of an idea – bronze makes them permanent.
“I am pursuing my idea of beauty, where ever it takes me.”
Born in Hastings, Stephen studied at Brighton College of the Arts before emigrating from the UK to Australia as a professional sculptor in the early 1980's. He relies heavily on traditional, classical precedents and careful anatomical observation. The stages of creating a sculpture are multi-layered and take years to master. Stephen has spent his career developing those skills.
His works are enthusiastically collected both nationally and internationally and public commissions adorn corporate and local government buildings around the world.
