Renowned Queensland artist, Mel Brigg, returns to Linton and Kay with a stunning collection of works entitled, The Journey. Brigg is an artist keenly attuned to the environment, who takes inspiration from the nuances of weather, light and climate and nowhere is this better demonstrated than in this exhibition. Here is a painterly collection of works in Mel’s masterful style, that encompasses landscape, still life and social commentary, spontaneously executed with numerous loose brushstrokes. Seen at close range the works are almost abstract spots and blotches of lively colour that, from a distance, meld to create vibrant, dynamic surfaces.
Brigg’s characteristic use of chiaroscuro creates lyrical illusions of form and space through gradations of light and shade rather than line, while his use of high and low key values sets up a compositional tension that compels the viewer. This is a motif he has used repeatedly in his semi-autobiographical narrative works that deal with leaving or arriving. Here his large painted fields of colour evoke emotional and aesthetic responses. In The Journey, Brigg continues his exploration of familiar themes boldly and confidently constructed.
Mel Brigg’s reputation continues to grow in Australia and abroad; The Journey will be strongly applauded by his followers.
