Stephen Glassborow

Stephen Glassborow

As a figurative Sculptor, Stephen Glassborow, has had a life long passion for working with the human form. Since completing a Fine Arts Degree in Fine Art –Sculpture, in 1978, at the Brighton College of the Arts, in the UK, he has worked continually. His career as a sculptor has developed to a point where he now sells his work in many countries of the world. He has completed commissions all around the Pacific Rim; in particular, he has public pieces in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul. Stephen is now exhibiting regularly in Boston, Palm Springs and Los Angeles in the United States and produced public Artworks in Boston and Laguna Beach, CA. In Australia, he has been in many Exhibitions, and has public Sculptures in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, and Victoria. As a contemporary sculptor, he has always had a desire to experiment with the framework within which he can place the figure. In each sculpture that Glassborow makes, he reflects an urge to manipulate the figure, and in doing so, he tries to capture the figure into a blend of the real and the abstract. In many of his pieces, you can see how he has been influenced by Art Deco figurative sculpture. But a lot of his bronzes have a much more contemporary perspective, blending abstract forms into the figure. Deconstruction and reconstruction, inspired by Greco/Roman ruins, also greatly influences Stephen’s work.

Stephen emigrated from England to Australia as a professional sculptor in the early 1980's. He relies heavily on traditional, classical precedents and careful anatomical observation. Nevertheless, his figurative sculptures are executed with a refined elegance and beauty. His work has been commissioned by numerous companies and collections throughout Australia and Asia including: Hilton Hotels in Sydney, Adelaide, Shanghai, Seoul, Bangkok; Qantas; KPMG Sydney; Crown Casino, Melbourne; AMP; ANA Hotel, Sydney; Park Grand, Sydney; Park Land, Kuala Lumpur; Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur; St George Bank and numerous private collections.

As a contemporary sculptor, he has always had a desire to experiment with the framework within which he can place the figure. In each sculpture that Glassborow makes, he reflects a fundamental urge to manipulate the figure through his eyes, and in doing so, he captures the figure into a blend of the real and the abstract.

The inspiration for his sculptures begins with a pose, through drawing, the idea begins to develop. He then creates a scale drawing from which he builds his clay original. Once complete, a silicon rubber mould is made, from which the final piece is made, normally in bronze. The stages of creating a sculpture are multi layered and take years to master. Stephen has spent his career developing those skills.
